*NOTICE*!!!

The inflow situation is increasing and the reservoir elevation is very high, as such the possibility of increasing the spill level to Emergency phase 2 in order to safeguard the dam exist. Emergency Phase 2 means total discharge ( plant flow for generation plus spill) will exceed 5,000 m3/s. This means higher impacts may occur in affected communities.

All stakeholders are therefore to alert their community members to prepare for the situation in order to minimize the impact.

NSG News wants answers to the following questions:

  • What is the evacuation plan for these affected communities?
  • What Is The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO)’s intervention?
  • Government and disaster management agencies waiting to react as usual?
  • The spillway exercise, is a scheduled exercise not a natural disaster – should lives be lost?

The Akosombo Dam, a pivotal hydroelectric power generation facility, plays a crucial role in Ghana’s energy infrastructure. Due to the substantial rainfall in recent weeks, the water levels in the dam have risen significantly, necessitating the release of excess water.

Affected communities, predominantly situated along the course of the Volta River downstream from the dam, have been alerted to the potential risks associated with the spillage. VRA’s notification underscores the importance of precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property.

Residents in these areas are advised to exercise caution and take necessary steps to protect themselves and their belongings. Immediate evacuation may be recommended in certain cases to ensure the safety of the affected population.

Follow NSG News as we bring you all updates from the DCE and VRA and the affected communities respectively.
