The Reality of Ghana’s Political Disillusionment

Ghana Must Work Series

In the midst of Ghana’s ongoing political discourse, the second edition of NSG News delved into the deep-seated frustrations and disillusionment of the Ghanaian populace, particularly regarding the upcoming 2024 elections. Hosted by Eamn on The Hot Seat, the program highlighted the sentiments expressed by citizens in a community within the Hon. Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah constituency, shedding light on the prevailing skepticism and disenchantment with the political system.

One of the recurring themes voiced by participants, such as a chop bar operator; “Me I won’t waste my time to go and vote. I’ll rather use that precious time to go sell Sachet water,” reflected a profound sense of resignation and prioritization of survival over civic engagement. This sentiment is emblematic of a broader sentiment among Ghanaians who feel that the promises made during campaign seasons are hollow, with little tangible improvement in their lives post-election.

The prevailing economic hardships, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic according to some, are viewed by many as a consequence of systemic mismanagement rather than merely external factors. Eamn acknowledged this perspective, acknowledging that while external factors do play a role, internal governance and policy decisions also significantly contribute to the current challenges facing the nation.

The NSG program, particularly the People’s Viewpoint (PVP) hosted by Victor, provided a platform for ordinary Ghanaians like “Mary The Mother of 6 (chop bar operator)” to voice their concerns. Mary’s testimony regarding the dire economic conditions leading some women to assume the role of breadwinners due to their husbands’ inability to find employment underscores the profound societal impact of these challenges.

The pervasive sentiment that voting in the upcoming elections may be a futile exercise due to perceived political apathy and broken promises is a sobering reflection of the disconnect between the political elite and the everyday realities of the Ghanaian populace. It underscores the urgent need for meaningful reforms, transparency, and accountability within the political landscape to restore faith in the democratic process and address the pressing socio-economic issues facing the nation.

As Ghana approaches a crucial juncture in its democratic journey, the voices of disillusioned citizens serve as a poignant reminder of the imperative for genuine change and a renewed commitment to inclusive governance that prioritizes the welfare of all citizens.
