Akosombo Dam Spill Exercise Impact on Mepe & Bator

On October 9th, the Volta River Authority (VRA) issued a warning regarding the Akosombo Dam Spill Exercise. As of the latest update, the Akosombo Water Level stands at 276.65 ft with a rise of 0.22 ft. The spill situation currently measures 2,547 m3/s, while turbine flow for power generation is at 1,416 m3/s. The expected total discharge is estimated to reach 3,986 m3/s. An additional ramp-up figure is anticipated later in the day, further emphasizing the critical nature of the situation. The emergency phase has been classified as Phase 1.

NSG News is reporting from Mepe, Bator and it’s surrounding towns and villages where rising water levels have forced a majority of residents to evacuate their homes in search of safety. Many residents are also making efforts to salvage their belongings, including refrigerators, cooking utensils, and educational materials, among other essential items. Community leaders have stated that they are in communication with the Assembly; however, as of now, no concrete rescue plans have been put in place.

Mr Amos Ahorsu popularly knows as Borlor the assembly member of the area has highlighted a pressing issue regarding the extraction of sand from certain parts of the Riverbanks. This activity, undertaken by an unidentified group of individuals, has significantly weakened the natural defenses of the community against flooding. The removal of sand poses an immediate threat to the safety and stability of the area, exacerbating the challenges posed by the Akosombo Dam Spill.

Given the gravity of the situation, it is imperative that the relevant authorities urgently address the concerns raised by Mr. Kofi Kwame. A thorough assessment of the affected Riverbanks should be conducted, and measures must be put in place to prevent further erosion and mitigate potential flooding risks.
