Devastation Unfolds in Mepe/Bator Community: Queen Mother Demands Urgent action

In a chilling account, Queen Mother Mamaga Adzo Sreku IV of the Mepe Traditional Area described the current situation in her community as reminiscent of a war zone, with almost 50% submerged under water due to the VRA dam spillage exercise. The distressing situation has led to chaos and a surge of residents seeking refuge.

Speaking on NSG News flagship program, “The Hot Seat”, Mamaga Adzo Sreku IV expressed grave concerns over the lack of communication and preparedness from the authorities. She stated that her office received no prior information regarding the spillage exercise, and there was no evacuation plan in place.

The queen mother pointed out that an organized simulation exercise was conducted, but residents later sounded false alarms due to inadequate communication. This has left the community grappling with uncertainty and fear.

Mamaga Adzo Sreku the IV raised a series of critical questions for the authorities. She urgently seeks to know when the spillage exercise will conclude, the extent of additional water to be expected, the basis on which the VRA determined the safe haven, and the adequacy of relief packages, given that the designated safe haven is on the brink of inundation.

Furthermore, concerns were raised about the limited options available for displaced residents. The primary school, currently being utilized as a refuge, is also susceptible to flooding. The mode of transportation for those seeking safety remains uncertain.

In a pointed critique, the queen mother expressed her disappointment with the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. She claimed that despite promises of contact, there has been no communication, and instead, the MP has been preoccupied with social media posts of the situation.

Mamaga Adzo Sreku IV stressed the urgency of swift and accurate information dissemination from the authorities to alleviate the mounting pressure on the ground. The situation, as she stated, underscores a systemic failure that has had devastating consequences for the people of Mepe and Bator.
