Western Regional Minister launches GH¢3m fund to establish first ICU
A GH¢3 million fund has been launched to establish the first Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the Western Region, aimed at tackling critical health needs and reducing preventable deaths associated with the absence of such a facility.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, will see the new ICU constructed at the Takoradi Hospital, which currently has no specialised critical care unit.
Launching the fund on Wednesday, September 3, Mr. Nelson said the project required collective effort, stressing that not all health interventions should be left to central government.
“This is something I should lead for all of us to contribute to having it established. I am doing the basic thing required of me as minister for the region. So, when we look back, at least we have something that will be handy in our region. From Asankrangwa to Shama, if anybody needs it, they know that it is available and they can access it,” he said.
The Regional Minister appealed to individuals, organisations, and corporate bodies particularly mining and oil companies operating in the Western Region to support the initiative.
“The call here is to everybody who will be able to contribute. We have many corporations in the region, including mines, oil, and others. If they come on board, we will get this done in no time,” he added.
Once completed, the ICU will provide specialised care for critically ill patients and strengthen the region’s emergency response capacity.
