U.S. 10% Tariff on Ghana Imports Excludes Key Exports Like Oil and Gas

The U.S. has clarified that its new 10% tariff on imports from Ghana, effective April 5, 2025, will not impact key exports like oil, gas, and energy products. This was confirmed during a meeting between U.S. Ambassador Virginia Palmer and Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in Accra.

Ambassador Palmer explained that the tariff is part of the U.S.’s efforts to address trade imbalances, not a punitive measure against Ghana. While critical sectors like energy are exempt, the tariff will affect goods under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), such as textiles and apparel.

Both sides are in discussions to explore exemptions for sectors like cocoa and garments, aiming to minimize any negative impact on trade and preserve their strong diplomatic relations.
