Tanzania Opposition Leader Tundu Lissu Charged With Treason Amid Crackdown Claims

Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu has been charged with treason following his arrest at a public rally where he called for electoral reforms. His lawyer, Rugemeleza Nshala, says the charges are politically motivated.
Lissu, chairman of the Chadema party, was arrested in Mbinga after addressing supporters and refusing to enter a police vehicle, prompting officers to fire tear gas. He later appeared in court in Dar es Salaam but was not allowed to plead to the treason charge. He did, however, plead not guilty to a separate charge of publishing false information. His next court appearance is set for April 24.
Authorities allege Lissu made remarks inciting rebellion, while his supporters argue he was campaigning peacefully. The case raises concerns ahead of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s re-election bid, as critics accuse her administration of silencing opposition voices.
