Spanish Patrol Vessel ‘Relámpago’ Docks in Ghana to Boost Maritime Security

The Spanish Navy patrol vessel Relámpago arrived at the Sekondi Naval Base on April 8, marking a significant step in strengthening maritime ties between Spain and Ghana. The visit is part of the EU’s Coordinated Maritime Presence in the Gulf of Guinea, aimed at enhancing regional security and environmental protection.
The vessel’s arrival coincided with the first official visit of Spanish Ambassador Ángel Lossada Torres-Quevedo to Ghana’s Western Region. Over the week, Relámpago will conduct joint maritime surveillance operations with the Ghana Navy before heading to other West African nations.
Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson praised Spain’s ongoing support in education, naval training, and maritime safety. Ambassador Torres-Quevedo emphasized that maritime security is a shared responsibility, highlighting Spain’s commitment to peace and cooperation in the region.
The visit also included diplomatic engagements with traditional leaders, reinforcing cultural and bilateral ties.
