A recruitment exercise for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) turned tragic on Wednesday morning, November 12, 2025, when a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra claimed the lives of six potential recruits and left several others injured.

In a statement confirming the incident, the GAF expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries sustained, noting that the tragedy occurred just before the official start of the 2025/2026 enlistment process.

Preliminary findings from the military suggest that the stampede began when an unexpectedly large number of applicants forced their way through the gates around 6:20 a.m., breaking established security protocols in a rush to enter the screening grounds.

Those injured in the incident have been taken to the 37 Military Hospital, where medical teams are providing emergency treatment. The GAF assured the public that all efforts are being made to stabilize the victims.

Authorities have begun the process of notifying the families of the deceased, and the Armed Forces have extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Further updates on the situation will be communicated as investigations continue.
