The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a scheduled shutdown of the Weija Water Treatment Plant on Friday, December 19, 2025, to undertake essential maintenance works aimed at improving service delivery.

According to a statement from the company, the shutdown will run from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., during which time water production and distribution from the plant will be temporarily halted.

GWL explained that the planned maintenance forms part of its routine efforts to ensure a safe, reliable and sustainable water supply, especially ahead of the Christmas festive season when demand typically increases. Water production is expected to resume immediately after the maintenance works are completed.

Several communities will be affected by the interruption, including Accra Central, Dansoman, Mallam, Weija-Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Kaneshie, Odorkor, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Abeka Lapaz, Tesano, Kokomlemle, Alajo, Nima, Maamobi, Dzorwulu, Abelemkpe, and surrounding areas.

Management of GWL assured customers that all necessary logistics and personnel have been deployed to ensure the work is completed within the scheduled timeframe.

The Managing Director of GWL, Mr Adam Mutawakilu, stressed the importance of the exercise, noting that it is vital for maintaining the integrity of the water infrastructure and enhancing overall service delivery.

“This maintenance exercise is crucial for sustaining the integrity of our water infrastructure and improving service delivery. We have deployed all the necessary resources and will work diligently to complete the task on schedule,” he stated.

Customers in the affected areas have been advised to store sufficient water ahead of the shutdown to reduce inconvenience. GWL apologised for any disruption the exercise may cause and appealed for public understanding as it works to improve water supply services.
