SA’s Hockey team withdrawal from the African Games is a symptom of a larger problem plaguing Ghana – EAMN

As a nation aspiring for progress and prosperity, recent events have cast a stark light on some deep-rooted challenges we must confront head-on. The withdrawal of South Africa’s hockey teams from the African Games due to Ghana’s ill-preparation and substandard facilities is not just a sports issue; it’s a symptom of a larger problem plaguing our country.

In my role as the host of the Hot Seat and Ghana Must Work series on NSG News, I’ve witnessed firsthand the repercussions of a mindset that prioritizes personal gain over communal benefits and national development. Many projects are initiated not with the intention of uplifting our nation but rather as opportunities for corruption and theft during procurement processes.

This mindset, akin to primitive acquisition, has seeped into our leadership, resulting in neglect of essential infrastructure like roads and hospitals while wealth accumulates elsewhere. The consequences are dire: abandoned projects, subpar quality, and economic hardships that hinder Ghana’s progress.

While corruption exists globally, in some regions, it inadvertently leads to new developments and economic growth. In contrast, in Ghana, it breeds stagnation and regression. Our failure to harness resources for the greater good is evident in the sorry state of crucial sectors like healthcare and transportation.

Furthermore, pressing issues like LGBTQ+ rights and illegal mining (Galamsey) underscore the fundamental flaws in our collective mindset. The mishandling of these issues reflects a lack of empathy, foresight, and a skewed sense of priorities.

To chart a path toward success and sustainable development, we must initiate a paradigm shift in our mindset and mentality. This requires:

  1. Accountability: Holding our leaders and ourselves accountable for our actions and decisions.
  2. Transparency: Ensuring transparency in governance and project implementation to curb corruption.
  3. Investment in Human Capital: Prioritizing education, healthcare, and skills development to empower our people.
  4. Infrastructure Development: Investing in robust infrastructure that supports economic growth and enhances quality of life.
  5. Environmental Sustainability: Addressing environmental challenges like Galamsey responsibly to protect our natural resources for future generations.

While external factors may pose challenges, our greatest obstacle lies within—our mindset. Let’s unite in demanding a transformation—a shift towards a mindset that values integrity, collaboration, and the common good.
