Russian Lawmaker Threatens U.S. Ships After Tanker Seizure
Russia has issued a sharp warning to the United States following the seizure of a tanker, with a senior Russian lawmaker openly calling for a military response.
Alexey Zhuravlyov, a deputy of the Russian State Duma, described the incident as a provocation and said Moscow should respond forcefully. Speaking publicly, Zhuravlyov argued that Russia’s response should include direct naval action, explicitly mentioning torpedo attacks and the sinking of several American ships.
The remarks signal a significant escalation in rhetoric at a time of heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington. While Zhuravlyov does not hold an executive position within the Russian government, his comments reflect increasingly aggressive language from influential figures within Russia’s political establishment.
There has so far been no official response from the Kremlin clarifying whether Zhuravlyov’s remarks reflect state policy, nor has the United States publicly reacted to the threat.
The tanker seizure and the subsequent statements have raised concerns among analysts about the risk of miscalculation and further escalation between the two nuclear-armed powers.
