OSP Rejects Medical Report on Ken Ofori-Atta, Says No Official Document Received

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has dismissed a circulating medical report claiming that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is medically unfit to travel. The OSP stated categorically that it has not received any official medical documentation from Mr. Ofori-Atta or his legal representatives.

The purported report, dated 14 May 2025 and allegedly signed by Dr. Ahmed Abdalrhim of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, appeared online on Tuesday, 3 June 2025. It attempts to justify Mr. Ofori-Atta’s failure to appear before the OSP for a scheduled meeting on 2 June 2025, citing a prostate cancer diagnosis and upcoming surgery.

The document, titled “And To Whom It May Concern,” reads as follows:

“Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to inform you that Mr Ofori-Atta has undergone an MR-guided Biopsy and has been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.

A surgical intervention has been deemed necessary, after the testing and MRI and Biopsy procedures in March 2025, as I indicated in my February letter.

This surgical procedure has been scheduled for June 13, with Dr Paras Shah of the Department of Urology (see attached letter). It is hoped that a closer date may open up.

Following the procedure, Mr. Ofori-Atta will require a recovery period before he is able to travel to his home country.

Please feel free to contact me if you require any additional information or have further questions.”

In a statement released the same day, the OSP made it clear that this document was never submitted through official channels.

“We wish to place on record that neither Mr. Ofori-Atta nor his lawyers have submitted any such letter to the OSP,” the statement said.

The OSP clarified that the only formal communication it has received from Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal team was a letter noting a change in his medical condition, but with no supporting medical records.

The office also questioned the credibility of the report, noting that it was circulated through the media rather than submitted directly to the OSP the institution actively investigating Mr. Ofori-Atta in relation to alleged corruption-related offences.

“It is notable that this alleged hospital letter has been circulated through the media rather than submitted to the law enforcement agency actively investigating him and responsible for decisions regarding his return to Ghana,” the OSP added.

The timing and public release of the alleged medical report have sparked skepticism in both legal and political circles. The OSP has formally distanced itself from the document and reiterated that, as of now, no certified medical evidence has been received to validate any claim that Mr. Ofori-Atta is medically unfit to return to Ghana or comply with ongoing investigations.
