Oppong Nkrumah Calls for Urgent Diplomatic Action to Secure Exemption from US Tariff on Ghanaian Exports

The minority in Parliament is urging urgent diplomatic action to secure exemption from the 10% tariff imposed on Ghana exports to the United States. Ranking member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, emphasized the serious threat this tariff poses to Ghanaian businesses reliant on the US market. He called on the government to swiftly engage in negotiations with US authorities to negotiate a waiver.
Hon. Oppong Nkrumah highlighted that the tariff increase will raise the prices of Ghanaian goods in the US market, jeopardizing their competitiveness. He stressed the importance of leveraging Ghana’s economic diplomacy, particularly through frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA), to address this issue effectively.
Furthermore, he connected the tariff challenges to the government’s proposed 24-hour economy initiative, emphasizing the critical role a vibrant export sector plays in its success. Inaction, he warned, could hinder efforts to enhance productivity and spur economic growth.
While awaiting official responses from the Ministry of Trade & Industry and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, industry stakeholders and business associations are anticipated to voice their concerns on this pressing matter.
