Niger: Gen Abdourahamane Tchiani was sworn in as president

Niger’s political landscape saw a significant shift as Gen Abdourahamane Tchiani was sworn in as president for a five-year term, following his takeover of power from the elected President Mohamed Bazoum in 2023. The inauguration took place in Niamey on Wednesday, 26th March 2025, where Gen Tchiani, now holding the highest military rank, expressed his dedication to fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to him with humility.
The country’s transition to democratic governance aligns with recommendations from a national commission, emphasizing adaptability based on Niger’s security situation, as outlined in the new charter that supersedes the previous constitution.
The junta’s initial proposal of a three-year transition faced resistance from Ecowas, leading to diplomatic tensions that have since eased.
Gen Tchiani’s administration has initiated legal proceedings against former President Bazoum, accusing him of serious offenses against the state, while Bazoum remains under confinement alongside his wife, with his son having been conditionally released earlier this year.
Gen Tchiani said the new charter not only upholds traditional constitutional principles but also introduces innovative measures to safeguard Niger’s natural resources for the benefit of its citizens, ensuring the fair exploitation of the country’s wealth as reported by the state-run news agency ANP.
