The National Communications Authority (NCA) has pulled the plug on three radio stations owned by Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, citing multiple breaches of Ghana’s broadcasting regulations.

The stations 95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi are part of the media network owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to the NCA, the sanctions were imposed after the stations failed to rectify regulatory violations despite being given a 30-day amnesty by President John Dramani Mahama. The breaches included the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and operating from transmitter sites that had not been officially approved.

Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991) prohibits radio operations without a valid Certificate of Compliance. The NCA said Wontumi Multimedia’s inability to meet this requirement within the grace period triggered the shutdown.

The crackdown was not limited to Wontumi’s outlets. Six additional radio stations across the country have also been taken off the air for failing to implement corrective actions during the amnesty window.

The Authority emphasised that it remains committed to strict oversight of Ghana’s broadcasting sector, warning that it will not hesitate to enforce the law to maintain compliance with licensing conditions and operational standards.
