Musk Criticizes Reported NASA Cuts as ‘Troubling’

Elon Musk has called reports of major NASA budget cuts under President Trump “troubling,” signaling another break between the SpaceX CEO and the administration.
Responding to a report that the Office of Management and Budget’s draft proposal would slash NASA’s overall funding by 20% and science programs by 50% Musk expressed concern, noting his inability to weigh in directly due to SpaceX’s contractor status.
“I support science,” Musk said, “but I can’t participate in NASA budget talks because SpaceX is a major contractor.”
The reported cuts come amid Musk’s growing public disagreements with the administration, including trade tariffs and staffing decisions. While he was tapped to lead government efficiency efforts, sources say Musk may soon step away from that role.
Lawmakers have begun pushing back. Sen. Chris Van Hollen called the proposed cuts “dangerous” and pledged to oppose them in Congress.
The White House has not confirmed the budget details or responded to Musk’s comments.
