Mahama’s Performance Proves Four-Year Presidential Term Is Enough – Inusah Fuseini
Former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini, has argued that Ghana does not need to extend the presidential term beyond four years, saying President John Dramani Mahama’s record shows effective governance is achievable within the current system.
Speaking on JoyNews on Saturday, December 27, Fuseini weighed in on proposals by the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) following the submission of its report to President Mahama earlier this week.
While acknowledging the work of the CRC, Fuseini said he remains unconvinced about the call to extend the presidential term, describing it as a recurring but unpersuasive idea in Ghana’s political discourse.
“I have reservations. I’m not entirely convinced that we need to extend the term of the presidency,” he said.
He recalled that the proposal dates back to 2009, when former President John Agyekum Kufuor argued that longer terms in countries like Singapore and Malaysia may have supported development. However, Fuseini said Ghana’s experience tells a different story.
According to him, President Mahama has demonstrated that a government can be formed quickly and deliver tangible results within a four-year mandate.
“He has shown that you can set up your government in less than three months and achieve significant success within the first year,” Fuseini noted.
He argued that this performance undermines the justification for a longer presidential term, insisting that accountability and progress are already possible under the existing constitutional arrangement.
The CRC’s final report, which includes proposals on term limits and executive-legislative separation, is expected to be made public in January.
