Mahama Questions 400 Million Dollar Cathedral Budget, Urges Broader Consultation
President John Dramani Mahama has urged extensive consultation with the Christian community before any final decision is taken on the proposed national cathedral, stressing that the project must reflect national priorities and be managed with financial discipline.
During a meeting with the Christian Council of Ghana at Jubilee House, the President noted that an interdenominational worship centre remains a worthy idea, but its design, purpose and cost must be agreed upon through a transparent and inclusive process.
He explained that the project cannot move forward without broad engagement, stating that Ghanaians must collectively determine the scope of the cathedral and what the country can reasonably afford.
The President also used the meeting to discuss wider national issues, including the anti LGBTQ bill and corruption. He reaffirmed that the cathedral project will undergo a forensic audit before any decisions are taken, adding that the findings will guide further consultations across the Christian community.
President Mahama raised particular concern about the reported 400 million dollar price tag, describing it as excessive in the face of economic constraints. He referenced Nigeria’s ecumenical centre, which he said was built at a cost of 40 million dollars, as proof that a functional and dignified national worship centre does not need to be overly expensive.
He added that while the cathedral could become an important cultural and architectural symbol, its development must strike a balance between national pride and responsible spending.
