President John Mahama has delivered a clear and uncompromising message to members of his government: the moment a minister becomes embroiled in a scandal, they should expect no protection from either the presidency or the governing party.

This warning was confirmed by the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, during an interview on Joy News’ PM Express. According to him, the directive from the President is firm, deliberate and fully supported by the party’s leadership.

Mr Kwetey explained that President Mahama has made it unmistakably clear that integrity and accountability are non-negotiable standards for those entrusted with public office. Any minister found to have engaged in wrongdoing, he said, would be left to face the consequences alone.

He noted that the party has aligned itself completely with the President’s stance, reinforcing the seriousness of the warning. With both the presidency and party leadership speaking with one voice, government officials understand that misconduct will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Mr Kwetey attributed the relatively low number of scandals within the current administration to this strict posture, stressing that ministers are aware there will be no political cover if they cross the line.

When asked whether this meant ministers could be dismissed or prosecuted, he responded in the affirmative, stating that anyone implicated in wrongdoing would face due process without interference. He emphasised that prosecution, court action and even imprisonment remain possible outcomes where the law has been broken.

According to him, the approach represents a conscious effort to end a culture where political parties shield their own, often at the expense of national interest. The NDC, he said, is determined to put Ghana first by allowing the law to take its full course in all cases of misconduct.

Mr Kwetey added that ministers have received the message loud and clear, noting that President Mahama has even reinforced the warning with humour—telling ministers that once they find themselves in trouble, they should not expect their calls to be answered.
