In a scathing critique of the current government’s governance practices, former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has denounced the loss of a $190 million electricity distribution deal negotiated under the US Millennium Compact.

Mahama’s statement, released via social media channels, lambasted the administration of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing them of corruption, negligence, and cronyism, which he alleges led to the dissipation of the funds earmarked for private sector participation in Ghana’s electricity distribution.

The $190 million deal, part of the US Millennium Compact, was intended to facilitate private sector involvement in improving Ghana’s electricity distribution infrastructure. However, Mahama contends that mismanagement and malfeasance under the current administration have squandered this opportunity, to the detriment of the Ghanaian people.

Promising accountability and transparency, Mahama assured Ghanaians of his commitment to investigate the PDS scandal thoroughly. He pledged to hold those responsible for the mismanagement of funds accountable, signaling a stark departure from what he characterizes as a culture of impunity under the current government.

Looking ahead to the upcoming December 7 presidential election, Mahama reiterated his commitment to enhancing private sector efficiency in the electricity distribution system. He outlined key areas of focus, including metering, revenue management, and fault response, as priorities for his administration.

In his closing remarks, Mahama called for unity in the fight against corruption and cronyism, urging Ghanaians to join him in building the Ghana they aspire to see. He emphasized the importance of citizen engagement and participation in shaping the future of the country’s power sector.

The government of President Nana Akufo-Addo has yet to respond to Mahama’s allegations. However, this latest salvo from the former president is likely to ignite further debate and scrutiny over the handling of public funds and governance practices in Ghana.

John Dramani Mahama’s condemnation of the loss of the $190 million electricity deal underscores the contentious nature of governance and accountability in Ghana. As the country gears up for the December 7 presidential election, Mahama’s promises of transparency and accountability will undoubtedly resonate with voters, shaping the discourse on the nation’s future trajectory.
