Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has unveiled a major solar energy initiative aimed at bringing electricity to more than 70,000 people in remote and island communities.

Speaking at a press briefing during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 16, Mr Jinapor said the programme called the Ghana Scaling Up Renewable Energy Programme (SREP) was launched on May 30, 2025.

Funded with $85 million from the African Development Bank, Climate Investment Fund, SECO, and the Government of Ghana, the project will provide 12,000 solar PV systems to households, set up 35 mini-grids for 47 island communities, and deliver over 1,400 solar home systems to off-grid schools, clinics, and homes.

“For the first time, families in these areas can power their homes, charge phones, refrigerate medicine, and support small businesses with clean energy,” he said.

The initiative also includes a 200-megawatt solar project in various regions and training programmes for local technicians in partnership with the International Solar Alliance.

Ghana will host the 7th Africa Regional Committee Meeting of the Alliance in September. Meanwhile, the Ministry is preparing to submit a Renewable Energy Authority Bill to Parliament to help drive the country’s green energy agenda.
