IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno confirms arrest of four suspects in Kumasi’s Ohwim Tigo Junction robbery that claimed one life.

The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has confirmed the arrest of four suspects in connection with the robbery attack at Ohwim Tigo Junction in Kumasi that claimed one life.

The incident occurred on February 10 when the victim, Andrews Amankwa, was shot and his Toyota Hilux vehicle taken by the assailants. He was rushed to hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

According to the IGP, intensified police operations led to a breakthrough on February 18 with the arrest of Akwasi Manu, who was found in possession of a mobile phone belonging to the deceased. He was subsequently arraigned before the Asokwa Circuit Court II on February 20 on charges of possessing stolen property and has been remanded into police custody to reappear on March 5.

Further intelligence driven operations resulted in the arrest of Bashiru Tanko on February 19 at Atonsu High School Junction in Kumasi. Two additional suspects, Kojo Amponsah and Emmanuel Kwame Appiah, were picked up on February 21 and 22 at Hwireso near Buokrom and at the Danyame Soldier Barracks respectively.

Police also confirmed that another suspect, Eric Acheampong Adu, who sustained gunshot wounds during the operation, later died.

Briefing the media, the IGP stated that investigations indicate the group operated as an organised criminal syndicate allegedly led by the deceased suspect. He said the gang specialised in the theft of pickup vehicles and Toyota Land Cruiser models.

Police say investigations are ongoing and have assured the public that efforts will continue to clamp down on violent crime in the region.
