Ablakwa Seeks Clarifications

Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, shared on his social media platform on Friday 4th April 2025 that he has extended an invitation to the US Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Virginia Palmer, for a meeting on the morning of Monday 7th April 2025. The purpose of this meeting is to seek clarifications regarding the US government’s decision to impose a 10% tariff on certain Ghanaian exports.

In his statement, the Minister expressed a desire for the US Ambassador to shed light on the rationale behind President Trump’s implementation of the tariff.

However in an NSG News internal interview with Eamn [Ghana Must Work Series host on The Hot Seat], he said it is essential to note that the US government’s trade policy, including the imposition of tariffs, is primarily driven by considerations related to their country’s interests and economy.

It is crucial to approach this matter with a diplomatic perspective, understanding that nations prioritize their economic well-being.

“Rather than questioning the US government’s decision, the focus should be on exploring avenues to potentially exempt Ghana from these tariffs through constructive dialogue and collaboration” – Eamn stated.

In diplomatic engagements such as these, it is vital to foster discussions that aim to find mutually beneficial solutions and promote positive relations between countries.

The Minister’s initiative to engage in dialogue with the US Ambassador should be a commitment to addressing trade challenges and working towards a resolution that serves the interests of both nations.
