Hearings on C.J Torkornoo Removal Petitions Begin May 15

A five-member committee will begin hearings on Thursday, May 15, 2025, into three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo. The hearings, held in camera as required by Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, follow a prima facie determination against the Chief Justice.
The committee, formed by President John Mahama under Article 146(6), is chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang. Other members include Supreme Court Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah of the University of Ghana.
Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed that the committee will meet three times weekly. While the Constitution does not specify a deadline, Ofosu said the expectation is for the committee to complete its work within a reasonable time.
Justice Torkornoo, appointed to the Supreme Court in 2019 and named Chief Justice in 2023, was suspended by the President on April 22, 2025, pending the inquiry into allegations of “stated misbehaviour.”
