The government has settled outstanding payments of about GH¢809 million to the contractor working on the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway, paving the way for construction works to fully resume.

Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Agyei, confirmed that the payments were completed in three tranches between July 24 and August 4, 2025. He explained that the government has now met all financial commitments tied to the project.

Contractors have since returned to the site, a development that brings relief to thousands of commuters who had been facing severe traffic congestion due to delays in repair works.

The resumption also comes at a crucial time, just days before the Ghana Private Road Transport Union’s (GPRTU) one-week ultimatum to government was set to expire. The union had threatened to halt operations if work on the highway did not restart.

The Member of Parliament for Amasaman, Sedem Afenyo, expressed confidence that progress on the project will now continue without further setbacks. He noted that prior engagements with engineers and local authorities had given assurances of action, and the latest payments confirm that commitment.

With financing secured, expectations are high that the highway project will move steadily towards completion, easing one of the capital’s most pressing transport challenges.
