Ghana’s Power Supply Struggles Tied to Energy Sector Inefficiencies

Ghana’s ongoing power supply issues stem from an inefficient energy value chain, according to Sulemana Abubakar, Deputy Director of Power at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.
Speaking at the JoyNews National Dialogue on April 10, Abubakar said the country’s energy system split into generation, transmission, and distribution lacks the cohesion and efficiency needed to ensure reliable electricity and affordable fuel.
“Our goal is steady power and affordable petroleum, but that relies on a smooth, efficient value chain,” he said.
He pointed out that despite reforms to unbundle and improve operations, persistent problems especially within distribution, managed by ECG continue to disrupt supply.
The Ministry, he added, is actively reviewing its policies to improve the sector and tackle these challenges head-on.
