The President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation, Jerry Shaib, is calling for stronger financial backing to drive the growth of weightlifting in the country.

Mr. Shaib, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe, made the appeal during the opening of the 2025 African Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championship taking place in Accra from August 15 to 22.

He noted that while Ghana is proud to host such a high-level continental competition, the long-term success of weightlifting in the country depends on consistent investment and attention beyond major tournaments.

“Weightlifting has never enjoyed the level of support that sports like football receive, yet it holds great promise for our youth. This championship gives us a chance to change that narrative by encouraging more participation and attracting new talent,” Mr. Shaib said.

The championship, which runs for a week, has brought together young and emerging weightlifters from across Africa, offering them a platform to compete for medals and recognition while also boosting Ghana’s visibility in the sport.
