Ghana Demands UN Investigation After Missile Attack on Its Peacekeepers in Lebanon
The government of Ghana has formally protested to the United Nations following a missile attack on the Ghanaian Battalion serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon.
The attack, which occurred on the evening of March 6, left two Ghanaian soldiers in critical condition after missiles struck part of the battalion’s headquarters during an exchange of fire between the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah.
Formal protest to the United Nations
The protest was lodged by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and addressed to the António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.
In a statement issued on March 7, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ghana) condemned the attack and demanded an immediate investigation into the incident.
“The Government of Ghana has called for a full, immediate, impartial and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack on personnel deployed in the service of international peace and security.”
The government also insisted that those responsible for the attack must be identified and held accountable, describing the incident as a serious violation of international law and a potential war crime.
Safety concerns raised
Ghana further urged the United Nations to take urgent steps to ensure the safety and security of Ghanaian troops serving under the UN peacekeeping mission, as well as other international personnel operating in the region.
According to the government, the soldiers deployed under the mission continue to make significant sacrifices in the pursuit of global peace and stability.
The statement also assured the injured soldiers and the entire Ghanaian contingent that the government would pursue justice on their behalf.
“The Government of Ghana assures our gallant soldiers that no effort shall be spared in pursuing justice and guaranteeing enhanced protection. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and their loved ones.”
Commitment to peacekeeping
The Ministry reaffirmed Ghana’s long-standing commitment to international peacekeeping operations under the United Nations.
It emphasised that protecting peacekeepers must remain a top priority in global efforts to maintain peace and security, adding that Ghana will continue engaging with relevant UN authorities while monitoring developments surrounding the attack.
