Civil society advocate Dr. Steve Manteaw has criticized the Mahama-led administration for deporting foreign nationals involved in illegal mining (Galamsey) instead of prosecuting them under Ghanaian law.

His remarks followed comments by MP Muntaka Mubarak, who revealed that some foreign nationals have been found engaging in serious environmental and cybercrimes, including illegal mining, unlawful logging, and global fraud operations. Despite the gravity of these offenses, Muntaka stated that the government’s policy is to deport these individuals rather than prosecute them, citing a preference not to spend resources on their trials.

Reacting on Facebook, Dr. Manteaw questioned the fairness of this approach, asking why Ghanaian offenders face jail while foreigners are simply sent home. He expressed disappointment, warning the government not to take public trust for granted.

“This is not what Ghanaians voted for. The NDC risks losing public goodwill if such double standards continue,” Manteaw stated, urging stronger action against environmental crimes regardless of who commits them.
