Critique of Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister's Social Media Post on US 10% Tariff by Eamn

The recent imposition of a 10% tariff by the US government on Ghana has sparked discussions
on trade dynamics.
Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, shared on his social media
platform on Friday 4th April 2025 that he has extended an invitation to the US Ambassador to
Ghana, Her Excellency Virginia Palmer, for a meeting on the morning of Monday 7th April 2025.
In his statement, the Minister expressed a desire for the US Ambassador to explain the rationale
behind President Trump’s implementation of the tariff.

The explanations is straight forward and clear. The US government’s trade policy, including the
imposition of tariffs, is primarily driven by considerations related to their country’s interests and
economy. President Donald Trumps’s trade policy, is part of a broader global strategy, not
specific to Ghana alone. Nations prioritize their economic interests when formulating trade
policies and decisions – Ghana should be encouraged to do same.

Hon. Ablakwa should approach this matter from a diplomatic perspective, understanding that
nations prioritize their economic well-being. Rather than questioning the US government’s
decision, the focus should be on exploring avenues to potentially exempt Ghana from these
tariffs through constructive dialogue and collaboration.
This diplomatic engagement with the US should aim to find mutually beneficial solutions and
promote positive relations between both countries.
The Minister’s engage with the US Ambassador should be towards addressing economic and
trade challenges facing Ghana and working towards a resolution that serves the interests of both
nations.

In the event that diplomatic efforts do not produce mutually beneficial outcomes for Ghana and
the US, Ghana should consider responding with a 200% tariff on all raw materials for which
Ghana is a significant exporter to the US.
