Controversy Erupts Over Dam Spillage and Hon. Dr. Freda Prempeh’s Response
The Akosombo Dam spillage has recently caused a significant uproar in Ghana, particularly in the North Tongu district, with Mepe and Bator at the epicenter of the devastation. The Mepe Development Association (MDA) has called out Hon. Dr. Freda Prempeh for her controversial comments on the situation, which have further intensified the public debate. The Association has called into question the accuracy of Dr. Prempeh’s claims and has requested further clarification on critical aspects of the situation.
Hon. Dr. Freda Prempeh, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, attributed the extensive damage caused by the spillage to the residents, stating that they should have evacuated, citing prior knowledge of a simulation exercise conducted by the Volta River Authority (VRA)
The Mepe Development Association has issued a press release, signed by the chairperson, outlining several critical questions directed at Hon. Dr. Freda Prempeh and the relevant authorities:
- Location of Simulation: MDA has called for clarification on which specific parts of the Mepe Traditional Area the VRA and NADMO conducted the alleged simulation exercise.
- Inclusion of Mepe Residents: MDA seeks to know how many residents from Mepe were actively involved in the said simulation exercise.
- Frequency and Community Engagement: MDA requests information on how many times the simulation exercise was conducted and the extent of community engagement that took place in the process.
Eamn, the host of NSG News’s program “The Hot Seat,” has criticized Dr. Prempeh’s statements, pointing out that similar flooding incidents have occurred in Accra, the capital, resulting in loss of lives. Eamn has challenged the minister to provide concrete data, alongside VRA and NADMO, to substantiate claims of the simulation exercise and the subsequent measures taken furthermore, The Hot Seat host Eamn has challenged the president of the republic H.E. Nana Addo to fire the minister siting that a minister who is not well informed cannot lead his/Her people.
The MDA categorically stated that the Mepe Traditional Council, Mepe Development Association, and key stakeholders were not involved in any simulation exercise, contrary to the Minister’s claims. The conflicting accounts from various parties highlight the urgency for a comprehensive investigation and a more coordinated response from the government. It is imperative that Hon. Dr. Freda Prempeh and relevant authorities provide satisfactory answers to the questions raised by MDA to restore public trust and confidence in the handling of this crisis.
