Government has reduced the cocoa producer price to GH¢41,392 per tonne, equivalent to GH¢2,587 per bag, for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season.

The decision, approved by the Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC), takes effect from Thursday, February 12, 2026.

Announcing the revision at a press briefing in Accra, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson said the adjustment was driven by prevailing conditions on the international cocoa market.

According to him, the new price reflects current global trends and forms part of efforts to restore confidence and stability within the cocoa sector.

“As a result, the PPRC announces that effective today, Thursday, 12th February 2026, the new producer price for the remainder of the 2025–2026 crop season will be 41,392 Ghana cedis per tonne and 2,587 Ghana cedis per bag,” he stated.

Liquidity and sustainability measures

Dr Forson explained that the revised rate is expected to inject immediate liquidity into the cocoa value chain, accelerate delayed payments to farmers, and ease financial pressures at the farm level.

He added that the price adjustment forms part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening the financial sustainability of Ghana’s cocoa industry.

The new rate marks a downward revision from the initial producer price set at the beginning of the season.

At the start of the 2025/2026 crop season, the producer price was fixed at US$5,040 per tonne — representing a 62.58 percent increase in dollar terms — translating to GH¢51,660 per tonne or GH¢3,228.75 per bag in local currency.

The reduction has sparked renewed debate about balancing global market realities with the welfare of cocoa farmers, given the sector’s critical role in Ghana’s economy.
