Bawumia in Stronger Position Despite Loss of Incumbency – Nana Akomea
Vice Chairman of the Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team, Nana Akomea, says he is confident that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will secure an even stronger showing in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries in 2026 than he did in 2023.
Speaking in an interview on Citi FM, Akomea insisted that Dr Bawumia’s internal party appeal has increased significantly, despite losing the advantages that came with incumbency.
According to him, this growth in popularity places the former Vice President in a highly competitive position ahead of the January 31, 2026 primaries.
“Bawumia’s popularity has actually risen without incumbency, and that is why I keep saying he will do better than he did in 2023. It’s just a month away you will see,”
Akomea remarked.
Five-way race for NPP presidential ticket
Dr Bawumia will face four other aspirants as the party prepares to elect its flagbearer for the 2028 general election. The contenders include:
- Kennedy Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central
- Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Food and Agriculture
- Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister of Education
- Kwabena Agyepong, former NPP General Secretary
The 2026 primaries are expected to be one of the most keenly contested internal elections in recent party history, with analysts highlighting shifting alliances and renewed grassroots mobilisation across the country.
Akomea, however, maintains that Dr Bawumia’s message, experience, and continued connection with party delegates give him a clear advantage as the race enters its final stretch.
