Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) specialist Austin Gamey believes that the ongoing conflict in Bawku could be resolved swiftly within just two or three mediation sessions if the right individuals are involved in the process.

Following a recent resurgence of violence in the troubled area, Gamey remarked that the prolonged nature of the conflict may be due to the absence of the right stakeholders at the negotiation table. He emphasized that once parties agree to mediation, the process should not be dragged out unnecessarily.

“If there is a genuine commitment to mediate, we shouldn’t still be seeing this level of hostility. It suggests that either the participants are not the right representatives or there’s a lack of sincerity in the process,” he said.

Highlighting the complexity of the conflict, Gamey stressed the importance of experienced and skilled mediators in handling sensitive situations like Bawku’s. He referenced the successful resolution of the Dagbon chieftaincy crisis as an example of what competent mediation can achieve.

While acknowledging and praising current peace efforts, he urged all involved to reflect on the effectiveness of those representing them. According to Gamey, without capable negotiators and a genuine will to resolve issues, even the best mediation frameworks will fall short.

“The solution lies not just in initiating mediation, but in making sure the right people are engaged those who understand the dynamics and are committed to peace,” he concluded.
