Tensions boiled over at the Akwatia Lorry Station in the Vawaso Electoral Area on Tuesday, as a heated altercation broke out during the by-election. The scuffle involved Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Third National Vice Chairman, and an aide to National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka.

Alhaji Masawudu told journalists that the incident occurred while he was granting an interview near the Akwatia Zongo area, where he had been assigned to monitor voting activities.

“I was monitoring the polls at Akwatia Zongo and speaking to the media when Azorka suddenly approached with his team. He tried to disrupt the interview and openly threatened that I would be assaulted,” Masawudu alleged.

According to him, the confrontation unfolded in the full glare of security officers. Witnesses at the scene confirmed that the exchange quickly escalated, leading to one of Azorka’s escorts allegedly slapping the NPP official before police stepped in to calm the situation.

Although tensions were high, no arrests have been reported. The clash adds to a series of confrontations that have flared between NPP and NDC supporters throughout the by-election process.

Voting is underway across 119 polling stations in the constituency, with over 50,000 registered voters expected to participate in what has been described as a crucial contest.
