Akufo-Addo to lead AU election observation mission in Congo-Brazzaville

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been appointed by the African Union (AU) to lead its Election Observation Mission to the Republic of the Congo ahead of the country’s presidential election.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 10, the Office of the former **Ghana**ian President confirmed that he will head the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for the poll scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2026.

Observer team to assess election process

According to the statement, the AU mission will comprise a broad delegation of stakeholders from across the continent.

The team will include members of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), representatives from the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), as well as participants from the African Governance Platform.

Officials from election management bodies, independent electoral experts, civil society organisations, and representatives advocating for women and youth participation will also be part of the delegation.

Travel schedule

The statement said Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to depart Accra on Friday, March 13, and return on March 18, 2026, after the completion of the election observation activities.

AU goal of credible elections

The mission forms part of the African Union’s ongoing efforts to support democratic governance across member states.

Through such observer missions, the continental body seeks to provide impartial assessments of electoral processes and promote transparency, credibility and fairness in elections held across Africa.
