The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Ghanaians to avoid non essential travel to Mexico following rising security tensions in parts of the country.

In a travel advisory issued to the media, the Ministry cited a major security operation conducted by Mexican authorities on February 22, 2026, which reportedly led to the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho and identified as the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

According to the advisory, the operation has been followed by coordinated retaliatory attacks by cartel elements across several states, heightening safety concerns for residents and foreign nationals.

The Ministry warned that the unrest has involved armed confrontations, road blockades and the burning of vehicles, resulting in casualties and disruption to transportation, business activity and public services.

Ghanaian nationals in affected areas have been urged to restrict their movements, remain vigilant and postpone non essential travel until the security situation improves. The advisory highlighted specific states experiencing heightened tensions, including Jalisco, Baja California, Colima, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Oaxaca.

The Ministry further encouraged Ghanaians in Mexico to maintain close contact with the Ghanaian diplomatic mission in Washington DC, which is accredited to Mexico and provides consular services.

Citizens requiring assistance, particularly in relation to travel challenges, security concerns or emergency evacuation, have been advised to promptly reach out to the mission.
