Fire Guts Girls’ Dormitory at Pong Tamale SHS Amid Rising School Safety Concerns
Pong Tamale Senior High School has recorded a fire outbreak after a blaze swept through sections of the girls’ dormitory, adding to growing concerns over fire safety in second cycle institutions in northern Ghana.
The incident is the latest in a series of fire outbreaks that have affected senior high schools in the region in recent weeks. Preliminary information suggests that the fire started from the washroom area, causing panic among students and prompting an immediate response to prevent the situation from worsening.
Firefighters from the Savelugu Fire Station were deployed to the school shortly after the alarm was raised. The fire was brought under control and fully extinguished, preventing it from spreading to nearby dormitories and academic buildings on the campus.
Authorities are yet to determine the full extent of damage, as assessments are ongoing to establish losses to school property and students’ personal belongings.
The latest fire follows similar incidents at other institutions in the region. On Monday, February 2, a fire outbreak at Tolon Senior High School destroyed parts of a dormitory and displaced several students. Earlier, on January 28, a major blaze at the Northern School of Business, NOBISCO, left nearly 900 female students affected after their dormitories were destroyed.
The recurring nature of these incidents has heightened concern among parents, education stakeholders, and the general public. Calls are growing for urgent measures to strengthen fire prevention systems and improve safety infrastructure in boarding schools across the country.
