The Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, has accused New Patriotic Party presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong of contributing to his own defeat in the party’s recent presidential primary by endorsing what he described as a flawed internal process.

According to Mr Tsekpo, key decisions taken by the party ahead of the January 31 primary compromised the fairness of the contest. He argued that although concerns existed at the National Executive Committee level, Mr Agyapong failed to challenge the arrangements and later became a victim of the same process.

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerged victorious in the primary with 56.78 percent of the votes, securing the party’s flagbearer position for the 2028 general elections. Kennedy Agyapong placed second with 23.76 percent of the total votes cast.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, February 1, Mr Tsekpo claimed that Mr Agyapong’s reaction since the announcement of the results suggested dissatisfaction and frustration over the outcome.

He contended that the primary was structured in a manner that favoured Dr Bawumia, citing what he described as a top down approach adopted by the party leadership. According to him, this approach disadvantaged other contenders in the race.

Mr Tsekpo further alleged that Mr Agyapong’s acceptance of the process ultimately undermined his own chances. He argued that electoral manipulation does not necessarily occur at polling stations, but rather through the design and execution of the processes leading up to the vote.

He maintained that Mr Agyapong had the opportunity to lobby for a different approach but chose not to do so. In his view, the decision to endorse the existing framework effectively sealed the outcome of the contest.

The Hohoe MP also claimed that preparations ahead of the primary, including the compilation of delegate lists and grassroots structures, were skewed in favour of Dr Bawumia. He alleged that these arrangements went unchallenged by Mr Agyapong.

As of the time of publication, the New Patriotic Party has not issued an official response to the allegations.
