Ghanaian statesman and business leader, Sir Sam Jonah, has called on African leaders to abandon economic deference and aggressively pursue the continent’s own interests as the global order continues to fracture.

Delivering the keynote address at the Africa Trade Summit 2026, Sir Sam warned that the era of a predictable, rules-based global system is effectively over, leaving Africa vulnerable if it fails to act decisively. He argued that shifting geopolitical realities have exposed weaknesses in global trade structures that disproportionately affect Africa.

Citing warnings from global leaders, Sir Sam said economic power is increasingly being weaponised through tariffs, supply chain controls, and trade restrictions, with Africa often bearing the consequences despite contributing least to global instability.

“This is the moment for Africa to be selfish unapologetically, boldly selfish in pursuing our interests,” he stated.

He urged African governments to prioritise local value addition, equitable trade arrangements, and stronger continental cooperation, rather than seeking external validation. According to him, Africa must reposition itself to negotiate from a position of strength in the evolving global economy.

Sir Sam stressed that the concept of selfishness, as he framed it, should translate into tangible economic outcomes, including job creation, industrial expansion, and the retention of wealth within the continent. He cautioned that continued reliance on raw material exports without value addition would only deepen Africa’s exposure to global shocks.
