Keta, Volta Region — In a powerful demonstration of international solidarity and humanitarian medicine, Fundación SOM, a non-profit medical foundation based in Spain, partnered with Keta Municipal Hospital and the Ghana Health Service to deliver a comprehensive free medical and surgical intervention for residents of Keta and surrounding communities.

Branded the Keta Medical Expedition, the initiative represents months of planning, coordination, and goodwill between health professionals across borders, with one shared goal: to bridge critical gaps in access to specialized surgical care for underserved populations.

At the heart of the mission is a highly skilled 14-member medical team from Spain, comprising surgeons, anaesthetists, pedestrians, nurses, and allied health professionals. The team worked hand-in-hand with Ghanaian medical personnel to provide complex but essential surgical procedures that are often out of reach for many patients due to cost, limited expertise, or long waiting times.

Addressing Critical Health Needs

The expedition focuses on conditions that significantly affect quality of life and, in some cases, survival. These include arteriovenous fistula creation for dialysis patients, inguinal and umbilical hernias, varicose veins, thyroid goiters, lipomas, skin tumors, vascular ulcers, diabetic foot complications, and amputations where clinically indicated.

From 13th July to 13th October 2025, patients were being screened and booked at the Out-Patient Department (OPD) of Keta Municipal Hospital. Actual surgical procedures took place between 27th October and 1st November 2025, ensuring that only medically assessed and approved cases were attended to a measure designed to guarantee safety, efficiency, and optimal outcomes.

Official Launch and Community Engagement

The humanitarian project was formally unveiled at a Free Medical Surgery Project Launch on Friday, 31st October 2025, at the Keta hospital conference room from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The launch brought together health authorities, community leaders, partners, and stakeholders to celebrate the collaboration and reaffirm commitment to accessible healthcare.

Strong Institutional Backing

The mission follows an official invitation from the management of Keta Municipal Hospital and has received the cooperation of Ghana’s health authorities. In a formal correspondence addressed to the Honourable Minister of Health, Fundación SOM requested logistical and administrative support, including facilitation of entry processes for the medical team underscoring the importance of government–NGO partnerships in advancing public health.

Fundación SOM also engaged the Ghanaian diplomatic mission in Spain to ensure smooth coordination, reflecting a growing model of health diplomacy that places people at the center of international relations.

Beyond Surgery: A Lasting Impact

While the immediate focus is on free surgeries, the long-term value of the Keta Medical Expedition lies in knowledge exchange, professional collaboration, and strengthened local capacity. By working alongside local doctors and nurses, the Spanish team contributes to skills transfer and reinforces best practices within Ghana’s healthcare system.

For the people of Keta and neighboring communities, the initiative offers more than medical procedures it offers hope, dignity, and renewed confidence that quality healthcare can reach every corner when compassion meets collaboration.

As healing hands cross continents, the Keta Medical Expedition stands as a reminder that healthcare knows no borders, only shared humanity.
