Anthony Joshua Released from Hospital After Fatal Nigeria Crash Kills Two Close Aides
British heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital in Nigeria after being injured in a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of two close members of his team.
The former world champion was involved in a fatal crash on Monday in Ogun State, near Lagos, while travelling in a Lexus SUV that reportedly collided with a stationary truck along a major expressway. Preliminary findings by the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) indicate that the vehicle suffered a tyre burst before the impact.
Joshua, who was seated in the vehicle at the time, was hospitalised alongside other injured occupants. A joint statement issued by the Ogun and Lagos state authorities confirmed that the 36-year-old boxer has since been declared medically stable and released to continue his recovery at home. The statement described Joshua as “heavy hearted” following the loss of his companions.
The accident claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, both close friends and key members of Joshua’s professional team. Ghami had worked with the boxer for more than a decade as his sport and exercise rehabilitation coach.
After his discharge on Wednesday, Joshua reportedly visited a funeral home where arrangements were being made to prepare the bodies of his late friends for repatriation.
Tributes have poured in from across the boxing world. Long-time promoter Eddie Hearn expressed his condolences, praising the loyalty and energy of the two men and offering prayers for their families and for Joshua during what he described as a deeply painful period.
Ogun State Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing, noting that the process remains discreet.
Joshua, who was born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents, had been spending time in Nigeria following his recent victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19. Fellow boxers, including Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury and Tony Bellew, have also publicly shared messages of sympathy and support.
