Parliament has approved the Ghana Sports Fund Bill, paving the way for the establishment of a dedicated funding mechanism to support sports development across the country.

The bill was taken through all its stages under a Certificate of Urgency on Thursday, December 18, bringing parliamentary consideration to a close. The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, was present in the House alongside the Chairman of Parliament’s Sports Committee, Ernest Nogbey, during deliberations.

The legislation seeks to create the Ghana Sports Fund as a sustainable source of financing for sports development and sports-for-development programmes. It also provides a framework for the management of the fund and outlines related operational matters.

When the long title of the bill was read on the floor of Parliament, the Sports Committee Chair indicated that there were no proposed amendments, clearing the way for a final vote.

Presiding over proceedings, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor subsequently called for a vote, which was carried unanimously, allowing the bill to be passed.

Following the successful vote, Sports Minister Kofi Adams formally moved a motion for the bill to be read a third time, marking its passage into law.

The approval of the Ghana Sports Fund Bill is expected to provide long-term financial stability for sports infrastructure, athlete development, and grassroots programmes, addressing one of the major challenges facing sports administration in the country.
