The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as its preferred candidate for the position of Chairperson of the African Union (AU) in 2027.

The endorsement was unanimously approved by the Authority of Heads of State and Government, following earlier backing from ECOWAS Ministers of Foreign Affairs at a meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria. The recommendation was adopted during the Council’s 95th Ordinary Session and subsequently forwarded for final approval on Sunday, December 14, 2025.

In a statement announcing the decision, ECOWAS commended member states for rallying behind Ghana’s candidacy, highlighting the country’s long-standing contributions to regional integration, diplomacy, and multilateral cooperation.

According to the bloc, the endorsement reflects a collective commitment to supporting candidates from ECOWAS member states for leadership roles in major international organisations, including the African Union. This, ECOWAS said, is part of a broader strategy to strengthen West Africa’s influence and visibility on the continental and global stage.

The regional body further noted that President Mahama’s endorsement underscores ECOWAS’ resolve to play a more assertive role in shaping Africa’s governance architecture and advancing shared regional interests.

The Authority of Heads of State and Government is expected to formally adopt and announce the declaration endorsing Ghana’s bid for the AU chairmanship in 2027 in the coming weeks.
