The Chinese Embassy in Ghana has restated its commitment to supporting the country’s efforts to curb illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.

Speaking at a training workshop on responsible reporting under the theme “Green Mining,” organised by the Ghana News Agency at Peduase on Thursday, December 11, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, urged a stronger and more united national response to the problem.

He stressed that both the government and citizens must approach the galamsey challenge with greater seriousness, warning that without collective determination, the fight will remain difficult.

Ambassador Tong also called on the media to report Ghana–China relations with accuracy and balance. He cautioned against broad generalisations that link the entire Chinese community to the unlawful acts of a few individuals engaged in illegal mining.

He reaffirmed China’s readiness to work with Ghana in promoting responsible mining practices and protecting the environment.

He added that China fully supports Ghana’s efforts to address the issue and encouraged Ghanaians to appreciate the urgency of the situation. He also reminded Chinese nationals in Ghana to comply strictly with the country’s laws.
