Mediation Committee Formed to Resolve Gbiniyiri Conflict

The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has inaugurated a special Mediation Committee to chart a path toward peace in the wake of violent clashes in Gbiniyiri, Savannah Region.

More than 13,000 people have fled into Côte d’Ivoire as a result of the conflict, which erupted on Sunday, August 24, over land disputes. The violence has claimed 31 lives, left homes and property destroyed, and forced thousands of families from the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District to seek refuge.

Acting on the directives of the National Security Council, the Ministry of the Interior set up the Committee with a mandate to facilitate the safe return, rehabilitation, and reintegration of displaced residents.

Minister Outlines Committee’s Role

At the inauguration ceremony, Minister Mohammed-Mubarak charged the Committee to deliver a comprehensive report within one month, complete with practical recommendations. He urged them to work hand-in-hand with chiefs, district assemblies, and security agencies to restore stability.

The Committee has been tasked to:

  • Request reports, data, and records from relevant institutions.
  • Visit affected areas and assess damage to homes and infrastructure.
  • Engage experts and consultants for technical advice when needed.

The Minister stressed that the process must be conducted with fairness, openness, and inclusivity. He also noted that consultations may take place either publicly or behind closed doors, depending on the sensitivity of the issues.

Collaboration and Peacebuilding

The Committee is also expected to collaborate with NGOs, religious groups, and development partners for technical and logistical support.

Committee Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Bombande, assured that the team will engage all relevant stakeholders to promote peace, reconciliation, and lasting resettlement for those affected by the clashes.
