The Anti-Galamsey Coalition is calling for a fair and decisive response to allegations linking political leaders across party lines to illegal mining.

Its Convenor, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, has urged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to act on a directive from the Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, which called for the investigation of National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives Joseph Yamin and Yakubu Abanga over suspected involvement in galamsey.

Dr. Ashigbey questioned the lack of visible action from EOCO since the Attorney-General’s July 15 instruction, stressing that the fight against illegal mining should not be influenced by political considerations.

He also highlighted the need for progress on earlier cases, including the probe into Akonta Mining and its directors, as well as allegations made against Aowin MP Oscar Ofori Larbi.

According to Dr. Ashigbey, the only way Ghana can win the battle against illegal mining is through consistent law enforcement, regardless of the political affiliation of those involved.

His call comes in the aftermath of the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed eight lives. The victims were reportedly en route to an event connected with illegal mining, an incident that has further intensified the spotlight on galamsey operations in the country.
