Tarkwa Police Arrest 23-Year-Old

In a significant operation that underscores the growing challenge of illicit drug trafficking in Ghana’s hinterlands, police officers in the Western Region have arrested a 23-year-old man, Daniel Yeboah, for allegedly transporting a large consignment of narcotics.

The arrest, which took place on Thursday, July 31, 2025, occurred at the Samreboi-Tanokrom snap checkpoint, a key security post along a notorious smuggling route. Yeboah was intercepted while travelling on a tricycle, locally known as a “Pragia,” a common means of transport in rural areas often exploited by couriers for discreet movement.

When officers conducted a routine search of his vehicle, they discovered two heavy travel bags, which upon inspection, revealed 66 compressed parcels suspected to be Indian hemp (marijuana). The parcels were tightly wrapped, suggesting a professional packaging style designed to evade detection.

The Courier’s Claim

During preliminary interrogation, Yeboah confessed to the police that he had been hired by a woman from Wenchi, located in Ghana’s Bono Region. According to his account, the woman had handed him the bags and directed him to deliver them to Mumuni Camp, a remote settlement near Samreboi. In exchange for this delivery, Yeboah claimed he was promised GH₵5,000 a substantial amount for an errand that now threatens his future.

Police sources suggest that Mumuni Camp is increasingly being monitored for suspected illicit activities, including illegal mining and unregulated trade routes, which criminal networks exploit for drug movements.

Investigation Underway

Following the arrest, the Tarkwa Police have intensified investigations to trace and apprehend the woman mentioned by the suspect. Law enforcement authorities are treating the incident as part of a broader criminal network potentially linked to organized drug syndicates operating within the region’s forest zones.

Daniel Yeboah remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear before court on Monday, August 4, 2025, where he is expected to face charges relating to drug possession and trafficking under Ghana’s Narcotic Control laws.

Public Call for Support

In a statement, the Western Regional Police Command urged the public, especially residents in and around Mumuni Camp and Wenchi, to provide any information that could assist in tracking down other individuals involved in the case.

“This arrest is a testament to our ongoing vigilance, but it also signals that drug trafficking networks are adapting and exploiting new methods to evade detection,” a police spokesperson stated. “Community cooperation is vital in dismantling these operations.”

A Growing Concern

Drug trafficking remains a persistent challenge in Ghana, with rural routes increasingly becoming favoured channels for smugglers aiming to bypass traditional security checks. The arrest of young individuals, often used as low-level couriers, has reignited concerns over economic vulnerability and the exploitation of unemployed youth by drug syndicates.

For Daniel Yeboah, what may have appeared as a quick opportunity for easy cash has now landed him in a legal quagmire, with severe implications if found guilty.
