President Mahama Launches Second Phase of Blekusu Coastal Protection Project, Vows to Halt Sea Erosion
Agavedzi, Volta Region – July 19, 2025 President John Dramani Mahama joined chiefs and residents of the Some and Aflao Traditional Areas on Saturday to mark the start of the second phase of the Blekusu Coastal Protection Project, a critical initiative aimed at shielding vulnerable communities from the devastating effects of sea erosion.
The event, held in Agavedzi in the Ketu South Municipality, was filled with emotion as locals expressed relief and gratitude for the long-awaited intervention. The Chief of Some and Member of Parliament for Ketu South conveyed the community’s appreciation, while jubilant celebrations underscored the project’s significance to the region.
For years, coastal towns such as Blekusu, Agavedzi, Salakope, Amutsinu, and Adina have faced severe land loss and economic hardship due to rising sea levels. President Mahama acknowledged their struggles, declaring, “The sea has taken land, livelihoods, and peace of mind, but today we say no more. We are reclaiming what was lost and securing a future where our children won’t be forced to flee.”
The project will protect an 8-kilometer coastal stretch through the construction of 37 groins, dune restoration, reinforced embankments, and other defensive infrastructure. Expected to be completed in four years, it aims to prevent further erosion and restore stability to the affected communities.
President Mahama emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering on its promises and dedication to sustainable development and climate resilience.
